Rizwan Malik, long time Valley RFC member and the founder and recently appointed (2025) President of the Pakistan Rugby Union, became involved with Rugby as a schoolboy in the early 1980’s, playing in HongKong age grade competitions from Under 15 to Under 24.
A fluent Cantonese speaker, Rizwan Malik was recruited by the then HKRFU’s Technical Director, George Simpkin in 1987 to work on the HKRFU’s "Rugby In Schools Development Programme". At the Union, he met and worked with Valley RFC stalwart Gary Cross, joining Valley RFC as a loose head prop, playing in the victorious history making 1989-1990 team, which won the HKRFU's League, Grand Championship and Knockout competitions. The first such occasion since Valley RFC’s 1975 foundation.
While competing at the 1999 Lahore 10’s tournament for a Pakistan Select team, Rizwan announced the formation of the Pakistan Rugby Union. Also in 1999, Rizwan secured Pakistan’s admission to membership of the Asian Rugby Football Union (now the 27 member regional association Asia Rugby) with the support of a Valley RFC founder, Jamie Scott, then Secretary General of the Asian Rugby Football Union and World Rugby Council member.
Pakistan first played as a national Union 4 years later in 2003, in a Sri Lanka hosted tournament with provincial and disciplined services teams and teams from India. Then in 2004, Pakistan played Macau in an exhibition match at the 2004 Hong Kong hosted Asian Rugby Football Tournament.
Pakistan then hosted an 11 Union ARFU Under 19 Tournament in Lahore in 2005.
Qualifying as an IRB Coach, Rizwan assumed the position of national coach from 2003, guiding Pakistan to winning an ARFU regional triangular competition in 2006, defeating teams from Guam and the Philippines. Participation in these events and fixtures led to the admission of Pakistan to World Rugby as a Full Member Union in 2008.
Rizwan spent the next decade developing and nurturing the national team as Technical Director and Head Coach leading in 2022 to Pakistan ranked at 90th in the world rankings of 113 Unions, defeating Thailand then ranked at 73 in the 2nd Division of the Asian Rugby Championship. This saw Pakistan rise to 4th - after Japan, Hong Kong and Korea in the 2022 Asia Rugby rankings
